Northern Lights in Norway
Northern Lights in Norway
Experiencing the Northern Lights in Norway.
Carol and I had a chance to experience the Northern Lights in Norway when we sailed with Silversea Cruises.
You can read our review of the cruise at this link.
I shot this photograph on September 5, 2022, at 11:16 PM, and if you click the map to the right, you can see our location when I captured this image.
Ordinarily, one might not expect to see the Northern Lights this far south in Norway, and not necessarily this time of year.
But our tour guide in Åesund showed me a photograph her friend had captured the night before, so I stayed up and searched the nighttime skies from the back of the ship until I caught this remarkable image.
As I was standing under a lot of light from the ship, the view wasn’t this clear. So I had to do a little post-processing to my photograph to eliminate the ship’s ambient light. And this is what I found lurking inside my photo.
As an amateur travel photographer, I was beyond excited.
You might also be interested to know that I captured this photograph with my iPhone 13 Pro. It would have been unimaginable, just a few years ago, to think that we might be able to capture such a photograph with a phone.
Generally speaking, to see the Northern Lights, you need cold weather, reasonably close proximity to the arctic circle, and clear skies.
